Académica and Farense drew (0-0) in a match of the 34th and last round of Liga 2, played this Saturday morning at the Estádio Cidade in Coimbra.
The match had, as we knew, no interference with the goals of either team – the students have long since consummated their descent into the League, while the Algarve are in a quiet position in the table – and, in Moreover, the strong heat that is felt in the city of Mondego also did not help the show to have a great interest.
The strongest moment came in the 83rd minute: Zé Castro ended his playing career.
The experienced 39-year-old central defender was applauded by all the fans in the gym, as well as his teammates and even his opponents. And the captain of Briosa could not hold back his tears… Born in Coimbra, it was at Académica that Zé Castro did all his training, leaving the club of his heart in 2006/2007, to head to Atlético Madrid, where he spent two seasons. This was followed by spells at Deportivo da Corunha and Rayo Vallecano, also in Spain, before returning to Portugal and home in 2017/2018. Even with a few injuries in the mix, the so far students’ captain, who turned Portugal international on one occasion, has still helped Académica over the past five seasons, always in Liga 2.
