After having already played three matches against Benfica this season (victories in the Supercup and in the first phase of the women’s championship and a defeat in the current phase of the Champions League play-offs), Sporting only has an interest in winning a direct confrontation which will place this Sunday at the Estádio da Luz to prevent the rival from revalidating the national title.
Bruna Lourenço, usual holder in the defensive axis of the greens and whites, with 22 games played, qualifies this decisive meeting as “yet another final”.
The defender also felt that the opportunity to play on such large stages – the title decision at the time had already been played out at Alvalade – values everyone’s work in an opinion shared by her coach, Mariana Cabral.
“Women’s football must be on the best stages and I congratulate Benfica for putting the game at the Estádio da Luz. It is absolutely certain that people can expect an excellent show, with a lot of people in the stands,” he said.
The environment will certainly be unfavorable, but the lionesses intend to prevent Benfica from adding the only point they lack to definitively decide the championship. “We had a weird match here with Famalicão…”, he recalls.
Even in the face of the imperative of victory, Mariana Cabral expects natural difficulties due to the adversary, who defeated the lionesses in the 1st round of the current phase. “I think the game played here is not so normal compared to what Benfica is in the way they play, it’s not that usual”, analyzes the coach who expects a balanced show at Luz.
