Former US President Donald Trump was banned from Twitter after the US Capitol was stormed in January 2021. Now Elon Musk is likely taking over the platform – and announcing that Trump will return.

Ex President Donald Trump can hope to return to Twitter in time for the 2024 White House race. Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who is set to take over Twitter, would let Trump return to the platform. The decision to ban Trump was “morally wrong and just plain stupid,” Musk said in a video interview at a Financial Times event on Tuesday.

Trump was banned from Twitter after expressing sympathy for his supporters who stormed the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021. In previous weeks, Trump had fueled sentiment with baseless claims that an election victory against Joe Biden had been stolen by fraud.

Trump recently said he doesn’t want to return to Twitter, even if he can. Still, presence on the platform, where he once had more than 80 million followers, could be important for a possible 2024 presidential bid. Trump has been very active in using Twitter to mobilize his followers and create atmosphere. He is trying to create his own social media platform, which is struggling with getting started.

Musk said Trump’s Twitter ban was a mistake because much of the American public disagreed with it. And that did not mean that the ex-president could no longer make himself heard.

It will be some time before we know if Musk will actually get Twitter. The boss of electric car maker Tesla has agreed with Twitter’s board of directors on a deal worth around $44 billion, but is still dependent on a sufficient number of willing shareholders give him their shares. Twitter and Musk aim to complete the acquisition by the end of the year.
