- Thousands of tourists climb the white rocky outcrop of Sicily’s southern coast every year to have their photo taken.
- The owner would now like to sell the Scala dei Turchi to Elon Musk. What are the chances of this proposal?
A dreamlike piece of the Mediterranean coast – sold to American multi-billionaire Elon Musk? A pensioner in Sicily caused a stir with a provocative threat. The man wants to sell the tourist attraction Scala dei Turchi, a brilliant white rock formation on the south coast of the Italian island. “We are auctioning it and asking Elon Musk in particular to buy it, protect it and make the best use of it,” Ferdinando Sciabarrà told the Corriere della Sera newspaper on Wednesday.
Scala dei Turchi: This is what the owner expects from Elon Musk
Official surveys years ago showed that most of the prominent rock belongs to the pensioner. The Scala dei Turchi has therefore been passed down from generation to generation. And so far it has also been open to the public: every year, thousands of tourists and onlookers climb the cornice of white marl, a sedimentary rock, or pose for snaps on social media. A few summers ago, a tourist portal chose the most popular Instagram beaches: Scala dei Turchi in the province of Agrigento took first place in Italy.
However, the popularity of the rock worries Sciabarrà, who, according to his own statements, has repeatedly tried to cede the area to the administration of Realmonte. Authorities could better manage the flow of visitors, provide security and prevent the rocks from collapsing under the crowds, he said. So far, however, there has been no concrete recovery plan.
So Tesla and future Twitter boss Elon Musk should step in, the retiree says — the seriousness of the proposal was left open. Of course, access must always be possible free of charge, Sciabarrà told “Corriere”. The man’s lawyer knew immediately how Musk could use the rocks and two dream beaches, for example for image reasons or to organize fashion events. “Of course not to build a kiosk or a hotel there,” he added.
