FC Porto team’s thrilling reception brought Sérgio Conceição to tears

It was already almost two in the morning when the team arrived at the stadium and presented themselves to the fans as the new national champions of the I Liga, received with euphoria and fireworks.

A night of strong emotions during the reception of the FC Porto team, at the Estádio do Dragão, with thousands of blue and white supporters asked the emotional coach Sérgio Conceição to remain in charge of the Dragons, champions football nationals.

In a festive atmosphere, and without major incidents, the orderly crowd, which occupied a good part of Alameda do Dragão, next to the club ground, waited until dawn for the arrival of the Porto delegation, deploying, for hours, in songs alluding to the conquest of the 30th championship and the presidency of Pinto Costa, without forgetting the provocations to the two rival clubs in Lisbon.

It was already almost two in the morning when the team arrived at the stadium and presented themselves to the fans as the new national champions of the I Liga, received with euphoria and fireworks.

One by one, all of the team’s players, already dressed in shirts hinting at the title win, were called to a platform with the crowd, with Zaidu, the hero of Saturday’s game against Benfica, in scoring the only winning goal, being one of the most appreciated, along with “captain” Pepe and midfielder Otávio.

On the stage, the athletes interacted with the supporters while singing some of the most emblematic songs of the club’s cheerleading team, not to mention the official FC Porto anthem.

But the highlight of the night was when Captain Pepe, who, microphone in hand, was one of the emcees, asked coach Sérgio Conceição to leave a few words to the chanting crowd asking that the coach, who at the start of the season renewed the contract until 2024, remains in charge of the “dragons”.

The coach could not hold back his tears in front of the crowd, and in a choked voice, and needing to take a few breaks, he thanked the support, praised the performance of the working group, and promised a new meeting with the fans, on the 22nd of this month, after the Portuguese Cup final, to “celebrate the double”.

After almost an hour of communion with the fans, the team retired inside the stadium, but Porto fans continued to celebrate the title at dawn in the surroundings of Alameda do Dragão.

FC Porto were crowned Portuguese football champions for the 30th time on Saturday, after beating Benfica 1-0 in a match in the 33rd and penultimate round of I Liga.

At the Estádio da Luz, Zaidu, at 90+4 minutes, scored the winning goal for the “blues and whites”.

The dragons now have 88 points, six more than Sporting, who can no longer reach FC Porto.
