In a very short time, the flames spread into a huge fire. The exact cause of the fire was initially unknown. The building did not have a firefighter safety permit nor was it equipped with firefighting equipment, Delhi Fire Chief Atul Garg said.

The two owners of the camera business – two brothers – have been arrested on suspicion of breaching fire regulations. The owner of the building would have gone into hiding.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the families of the victims. Authorities have announced compensation.

Poor fire protection systems, a lack of emergency exits and outdated electrical systems are the main causes of devastating fires in India. In 2019, a fire in a factory in Delhi killed 43 people.
