After the resignation of Sebastian Kurz, the new Chancellor Nehammer now also takes over the leadership of the Austrian People’s Party. She is currently in a difficult position.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, in office for a good five months, is now also the leader of the conservative ÖVP party. At an extraordinary federal party conference on Saturday, 100% of delegates voted for him. The 49-year-old accepted the election. The ÖVP has been governing in alliance with the Greens since the beginning of 2020. The coalition is considered stable.

His predecessor Sebastian Kurz (35) resigned as Chancellor after corruption suspicions began in October 2021. He retired from politics and now works for US investor and billionaire Peter Thiel , close to former US President Donald Trump.

the party is in a difficult position

Nehammer was the only candidate for the post. The party is in a difficult position. Investigations are underway against various senior ÖVP politicians suspected of corruption, the party’s polls, spoiled by power, have fallen sharply, and a few days before the party meeting, Nehammer had to reshuffle the cabinet after the resignation of two ministers. Nehammer wanted to give the party an “injection of courage”, according to his surroundings.

“It is also about regaining the trust that has been lost to some extent,” the Chancellor told the “Kleine Zeitung”. About 600 delegates are eligible to vote among more than 1,000 guests at the party congress in Graz.

Nehammer has also made international headlines recently due to his surprise visit to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting passed without any concrete result.
