Vila do Conde City Council was the scene of a tribute to the men of Rio Ave who had won the maximum League 2 title the day before and the subsequent ascent to the League, from which they had fallen precisely one day ago year.
In the main hall of the 16th century building that houses the municipal services, Vítor Costa, president of the municipality, received players, technicians, managers and other agents of Rio Ave to “thank everyone for the title obtained”, which he came to compare to the Portuguese epic across the seas of this world, “when many Vila-Condenses boarded our caravels and set out for great conquests”. Thus, Vítor Costa now sets himself the goal, which he prefers to call a dream, “a good performance in the league and a trip to Europe”.
At his side, António Silva Campos also said he was “proud of the feat he has accomplished”, while guaranteeing the hardness of the race. “I was told that the second league was hell. I confirm. But now we are not going to heaven either,” he commented. The Rio Ave leader just doesn’t want to get into high rallies. “We will do our best within our means. I heard about Europe here. We make no promises. We will form a team adapted to us and to the city of Vila do Conde”, he assured on the occasion.
Captain Vítor Gomes, a local, ended by thanking all his companions and other employees for “the happiness experienced at this time”.
