The Bundeskartellamt has determined the “exceptional intermarket importance” of the Meta group. This gives the authority more scope to take action against the Facebook owner’s practices.

With 3.5 billion users worldwide and annual profits of US$40 billion, Meta is a key player in the social media industry, according to Cartel Office director Andreas Mundt. But the cartel guards had a hard time putting the Californian group in their place. In this moment, it will finally end here. Over the next five years, Meta will be subject to a special abuse check by the Federal Cartel Office. Meta said he accepts this decision.

This gives more powers to the agency. One result could be that proceedings against the meta can be completed much faster than before. The group and the Federal Cartel Office have been arguing for more than three years over whether Meta is allowed to merge user data from its many services.

Accurate Metaverse Verification

The Bundeskartellamt also wants to take a closer look at the so-called metaverse. This 3D virtual world is considered Meta’s great future project.

Among major US tech companies, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is already under special surveillance by the Federal Cartel Office. The Office has also taken legal action against Amazon and Apple.
