A Nice’s victory over Saint-Étienne, this Wednesday, for the 36th day of Ligue 1, was marred by shocking chants from the Ultras of Nice, who mocked the death of the Argentinian Emiliano Sala, a former Nantes striker who died in a plane crash in 2019.
In a post-match press conference, Nice coach Christophe Galtier denounced the insults in the stands. Last Saturday, Nantes won the Coupe de France against Nice, after a 1-0 victory. In the final of the tournament, Emiliano Sala was honored from the ninth minute of the match.
The song, sung nine minutes into the first half by Nice supporters, read: “He’s an Argentinian who can’t swim well… Emiliano, you’re still underwater…” On its official website, the club issued a statement berating the attitude of these supporters and asking for respect from Sala and his family.
