Benfica are trying to sell Grimaldo’s pass, a 26-year-old left-back who has been with the club since 2015/2016, in this market window, which will most certainly be the last chance to make money with the defender: his contract ends in the summer of next year.
But the strongest possibility for Grimaldo seems to have fallen. In Spain, mainly through the Catalan media, they take it for granted that Barcelona will no longer proceed with the signing of Grimaldo, who has always been on the list. Barca continue to want a left-back but, they claim, they are betting all their chips on Marcos Alonso, a Spaniard who has just one season left on his contract with Chelsea and wants to return to Spain; or Gayá, Valencia’s left-back.
The episode leading up to the game in the final round of the Championship, with the full-back showing his displeasure at having to continue his journey towards the challenge at Paços de Ferreira (the last of the season and with nothing under discussion) and find himself jump from the summoned, created unease in SAD and does not support his future in Luz.
For the game in Paços were not called, for technical reasons, for example, Otamendi, Darwin or Vlachodimos. Grimaldo will not have been satisfied when he learned that he was on the travel list, he who was the second most used of the season, only losing in a few minutes against Vlachodimos. The argument of a lot of use (not least because there has never been another left-back in the squad) ended up prevailing and the Spaniard didn’t travel north. And the moment, of a certain embarrassment, can leave a trace.
