THE BALL – João Almeida scores a goal in the Giro (Cycling)

Third in the general classification of the Giro, after completing 12 stages of the race, João Almeida spoke to the Spanish daily Like.

The UAE Emirates pilot spoke about the first stages and the ascent to Blockhaus: “The first stages were good for me. At the Blockhaus, I didn’t feel well from the start, but we saved the day by finishing the group in front. I have the team around me and we are where we want to be, with the same time as the leaders”. When asked why he was not feeling well, João Almeida brought up the “change of bike”.

João Almeida suffered on the climb to the Blockhaus, but managed to stick with Carapaz, Mikel Landa and Romain Bardet. The Portuguese commented on the fact that the three cyclists had slowed down in the last kilometer: “It was good for me because that way I could rest a bit and breathe to be able to face them in the last meters, which were hard. It was easy to waste time. Arrive with them and I think I had a good sprint despite starting behind. I am really happy.”

João Almeida was challenged to mention the aspects in which he has improved the most since 2020, the year in which he wore the pink jersey for 15 days and came close to the podium: “I am stronger, better physical condition. I am also more experienced. Still, I’m young and I have a lot to learn.”

About the main objective of this edition of the Giro, the 23-year-old Portuguese confessed: “The podium is the objective, but if I stay in the top five, I will be happy. If I don’t get on the podium, it will be because of bad luck or because my opponents are stronger. I will give it my all.
