Liverpool beat Aston Villa 2-1 on the tough trip to Birmingham. Jurgen Klopp’s side added three more points in a delayed game on Matchday 33 of the Premier League and joined Manchester City at the top of the table, albeit with one more game played. However, the result puts pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side, who travel to Wolverhampton on Wednesday.
The Reds’ task at Villa Park was not easy, especially in the first half. Aggressive and intense, the home team came into play in a devastating way: at the third threat, the ball entered the opposing goal (3rd), Douglas Luiz managed to reload, after Alisson’s inglorious stoppage.
The answer was quick to come, the draw (6′) leading to the signing of Matip. However, the Cameroonian’s goal – following a free kick, after Van Dijk’s attempt was stopped by Emiliano Martínez’s glove – did not pinch the balance of the match, which drew a yellow smile on the face of Jurgen Klopp, uncomfortable on the bench.
The break had a positive effect on the visitors, who returned to the pitch with more dominance. Seriously reducing the daring of the villains, they settle more comfortably in the attacking midfield and place themselves in front of the marker: recovery of the ball in the midfield, Diogo Jota launches Luis Díaz from the left and the former FC Porto assists Mané with a lot of quality for an indefensible header (65′).
Until the end, the danger continued to lurk near Martínez’s goal more often, however, the result remained unchanged: Liverpool now have the same 86 points as Manchester City, but the advantage is citizens, with a better goal difference (+68 against +65 for Liverpool). Aston Villa remains in 11th position (44 points).
