The U-17 team begins participation in the European U-17 Championship on Tuesday, which takes place in Israel. Rui Bento (replaced coach José Lima who tested positive for Covid-19) set the goal for the competition.
“We see the tournament as another growth opportunity for our youngsters, we know it is a demanding and good environment for their development. We respect all opponents, because we know the quality of each one. We hope that our players are happy and we hope to have a positive participation. We think game by game, looking at all the teams with great respect. Then we’ll see what our quality of play gives us”, he explained, regretting the absence of José Lima during the first match: “We had the bad luck that our coach was not there yet, let’s hope that everything will go well and that he can come for the second game. However, Mr. José Lima has always been present, today fortunately it is already possible thanks to new technologies. We were in constant articulation. The players know the situation, we don’t like it happening, but we have to resolve it and we have tried to ensure that this situation affects our work as little as possible.”
Remember that Portugal is in Group D of the European Under-17 Championship. The local team begins by facing Scotland (May 17), followed by Sweden (May 20) and Denmark (May 23). The top two teams qualify for the quarter-finals.
