Two further cases of monkeypox have been recorded in the UK. As the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) announced on Saturday, there is no link to a recently known case.

Two people from the same household are affected. One is being treated in a hospital, the second is in isolation at home. Possible contact persons have been informed, he said.

Monkeypox: Mild to severe symptoms

It was not initially known where the two patients had been infected. Health authorities had already reported a case of monkeypox last week. At the time, it was said that the patient was probably infected in Nigeria and then traveled to Britain.

According to the UKHSA, the rare viral disease usually only causes mild symptoms, but can also have severe courses. Only symptomatic patients in close contact are contagious. The authority considers the risk to the general population to be low.

Symptoms include a rash that first appears on the face and then mainly affects the hands and feet. (sbi/dpa)
