Ulisses Santos, the representative of Vlachodimos in Portugal, defended the Benfica goalkeeper. The businessman pointed out that the Greece international “has been one of Benfica’s most important and influential players since his arrival” and, using some facts and statistics, stressed that Ody “must deserve all respect and admiration”. The words of Ulisses Santos appear in the sequence of Statements by Hélder Cristóvão, who felt that Vlachodimos “is not a Benfica goalkeeper”. “You need someone to play further and start building safely, but I have to admit he had a great season,” the former Benfica B manager told Lusa.
Ulisses Santos’ post in full:
“IT’S NOT EASY TO SCORING GOALS
Odysseas Vlachodimos has been one of SL Benfica’s most important and influential players since his arrival, on this point and in fact it is not possible to disagree. He is an exemplary athlete on and off the field, without more commitment and he must deserve all the respect and admiration.
Sometimes it seems like an easy target, from (some) public opinions, but we can’t forget for example that just talking about this season, it was fundamental for Benfica to enter the League of champions and to receive as many millions; was the third best goalkeeper in the Champions League (for UEFA with 277 points); he was twice in the team of the week this season, at the time of the elimination of Benfica he was the 15th best player in the biggest club competition in the world! In 2018, he was in the eleventh revelation of the Champions League, for UEFA.
In Portuguese competitions, how many times in the best eleven of the rounds, how many times the man of the match, there are so many times until you lose count. Even in the footwork of goalkeepers which is currently being talked about a lot, knowing how to build a game, Ody (according to CIES) is the one who makes the fewest long passes, having great efficiency in passes. Anyway.
The data is endless, and so is the respect and admiration for an athlete who has achieved extraordinary feats and contributed so much to his club.”
