FC Porto and Sporting already know what pot they are in in the group stage draw
As the various European championships come to an end, some of the participants in the next edition of the Champions League are beginning to be known and the constitution of the pots is beginning to take shape.
The two Portuguese teams who have already secured their presence in Europe’s biggest club competition, FC Porto and Sporting, already know their fate in relation to pots, already knowing some teams they avoid and possible opponents.
Starting with the new crowned champion, FC Porto has ensured its presence in pot 1 of the Champions, and thus avoids several sharks of European football, such as Real Madrid, Bayern and PSG, which like the dragons have won their championships. respective and ensured seeded status.
The English champion (Manchester City or Liverpool), the Italian champion (Milan or Inter), the winner of the Europa League (Eintracht Frankfurt or Rangers) must still be added to this batch of teams. The Dutch champions (Ajax or PSV) guarantee their presence in Pot 1 if Liverpool win the Premier League and the Champions League final this year or if the team of Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz do not win both competitions. In the latter scenario, the Reds would enter Pot 2.
In the case of Sporting, which ensured its presence in the group stage of the Champions by being in second place in the championship, they already know that they will be assured in pot 3. The lions are avoiding, for the moment, Napoli and Bayer Leverkusen. The remaining vacancies are still very much in doubt, with teams from several European leagues pending. Teams like Dortmund, Red Bull Salzburg and Shakhtar Donetsk depend on third parties to know if they are in Pot 2 or 3. Inter will go to Pot 3 if they don’t win Serie A.
Benfica have yet to guarantee their presence in the group stage, but they know they will keep the city rivals company if they manage to get past the next two rounds.
Pot 2 will not feature any Portuguese team, but it already knows two of its members: Barcelona and Juventus. In addition to these two teams, this pot will have at least two English teams (Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham), Liverpool can join, as mentioned above. Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla and Leipzig will also enter Pot 2 if they qualify.
Pot 4 has no confirmed participants yet.
