Statements by José Mourinho during the Roma-Leicester preview press conference, Conference League semi-final second leg
José Mourinho took advantage of the press conference ahead of Roma-Leicester – second leg of the semi-finals of the Conference League – to praise Brendan Rodgers, manager of the English team. The first leg, remember, ended in a 1-1 draw.
“Brendan doesn’t surprise me. In Liverpool, people have forgotten what he has done. With far fewer resources than Liverpool have now, he has done an incredible job. What Leicester are doing is fantastic. They have done by winning the Premier League was incredible, but after that the club grew on every level and now they have one of the best training facilities in Europe.”
Failing to compete in the Champions League next season, Roma can no longer reach fourth place in Serie A, which would give direct access, Mourinho wants to guarantee his presence in the group stage of the Europa League and end the season by a title.
“We can still qualify for Europe through the League and we can’t just ignore this opportunity. We have to do everything we can to achieve that. I think it’s been so hard work for all of us that I think we deserve to end “the season with something to celebrate. Of course, a trophy would be amazing. To finish in a position that allows us to play in European competitions next season would also be positive. But we give everything we have, each one of us,” he concluded.
The other semi-final, which will oppose Marseille to Feynoord, is also scheduled for Thursday, at 8:00 p.m., with the Dutch leaving with a 3-2 advantage.
The final of the first edition of the Europa Conference League is scheduled for May 25 at the Kombetare Arena in Tirana, Albania.
